How to start a car engine if your car`s battery is dead?

There are four available and really working ways to reanimate a car. Detailed instructions are included.

Low temperatures sometimes bring unpleasant surprises even to those who regularly change the battery in the car. If it is –25 ° C or less outside, a fully functional battery loses up to half its capacity overnight: the electrolyte thickens, the course of chemical reactions slows down and the battery can no longer give up all the stored energy.

Riding in the city cycle with the heater turned on, heated mirrors and seats also does not contribute to proper battery charging, not to mention the fact that you can simply forget to turn off parking lights or other appliances in the parking lot.

If the battery does not show signs of life, do not immediately panic. There are no hopeless situations. There are at least four ways to bring a car to life even with a dead battery.

1. Jump-Start it.

The universal and most correct way of resuscitation. Deservedly the most popular among drivers.

Suitable for injection, carburetor and diesel cars with any type of transmission.

What do you need to jump-start a car?

  • Donor car
  • Jump-starting cables

Unless trouble has caught you in a dense forest, problems with a donor machine should not arise. But with a set of starting wires it is more difficult: if you do not carry one in the trunk, you can only hope that the driver who comes to your aid will be more prudent.

How to Jump-Start a Car

In order to successfully start a car with a planted battery and not harm the donor machine, it is important to follow the correct sequence of actions:

  1. Place cars as close as possible to each other: bumper to bumper or bumper to wing, depending on the location of the batteries.
  2. Stop the donor engine and be sure to turn off the ignition so as not to burn the electronics.
  3. Connect the positive terminals of both batteries with the red starting wire, starting with a working one.
  4. At one end of the black wire, connect to the cylinder block or other metal part of the engine of your car away from the elements of the fuel system, and the second to the negative terminal of the battery-donor.
  5. Try starting your car with no more than 2-3 attempts.
  6. After the engine starts, let it run for a couple of minutes and disconnect the wires in the reverse order.

Do not try to light a car with a displacement of more than two liters, especially a diesel engine, from a small car. The capacity of the donor battery must be greater than or equal to the capacity of the battery to be reanimated.

2. Push a car

The classic, one might say, grandfather method, when the engine is started by accelerating the car and engaging the gear. An injection engine in this way can be started only if the battery is not fully planted and there is enough charge so that the fuel pump pumps fuel from the tank into the system.

What do you need to push a car?

  1. Tow rope.
  2. Other serviceable cars or assistants. Not even in a crowded place, you can find if not another car, then at least a couple of concerned volunteers who are ready to push your car. Well, the cable should always be in the trunk.

How to push a car?

The method is extremely simple and does not require any special skills, except for coordinating actions and conditional signals with all participants in the process.

  1. Connect both vehicles with a tow rope.
  2. Turn on the ignition on your car, depress the clutch and shift to third gear 3. without releasing the clutch pedal.
  3. Give the command to the driver of the towing car to start driving.
  4. After accelerating to 10–20 km / h, gently release the clutch.
  5. When the engine starts, squeeze the clutch again and signal the other driver.

Do not rush to switch to neutral gear and let the engine run with the clutch depressed, otherwise it may stall immediately due to cold oil in the transmission. Remember this if strong volunteers will disperse the car.Do not rush to switch to neutral gear and let the engine run with the clutch depressed, otherwise it may stall immediately due to cold oil in the transmission. Remember this if strong volunteers will disperse the car.

3. Use rope

Quite a complicated way, which nonetheless will help out if there is no one to expect help from.

Only suitable for cars with manual transmission.

What do you needed

  1. Jack.
  2. Tow rope

Each driver has a jack in the car. The tow rope should also be. If it is not in the car, any rope at least 2-3 meters long will do.

How to start a car with rope

  1. Put the car on the parking brake and put stones or other stops under the wheels.
  2. Using a jack, lift the machine so that one of the drive wheels is in the air.
  3. Turn on the ignition and third gear.
  4. Wrap a few turns of a cable or rope tightly on the wheel and pull sharply (you can run to the side).
  5. If you cannot start the engine the first time, repeat the procedure.
  6. When the engine starts, engage neutral gear and lower the machine by removing the jack.

Do not tie the cable to the disk and do not wind on the hand. Otherwise, after starting the engine, there is a risk of serious injury when the cable is wound around a spinning wheel.

4. Use Jump-Starter device

Start-charging devices, or the so-called boosters, are the most technologically advanced method of starting a car with a discharged battery. Thanks to lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, these miniature gadgets are capable of delivering tremendous currents even with a small capacity.

Suitable for injection, carburetor and diesel cars with any type of transmission.

What do you need

  1. Booster.

The advantage of launchers is that they are completely autonomous. In addition to the booster itself, nothing else is needed to start the machine. The downside is the relatively high price of gadgets.

How to start a Car with a Booster (Jump-Starter)

Each booster comes with detailed instructions, but the general principle of operation is the same.

  1. Turn off the ignition in the car.
  2. Connect the “crocodiles” of the booster to the battery terminals, observing the polarity.
  3. Start a car.

Boosters run cars with engine volumes up to two liters without any problems, even in severe frost and with a fully discharged battery. Difficulties can only be with engines with a volume of more than two liters, especially with diesel engines.

How to prevent battery death

  1. In order not to get into unpleasant situations, you need to monitor the condition of the battery and change it in a timely manner, without waiting for a complete failure.
  2. When starting the engine, always squeeze the clutch. This eliminates the need for the starter to rotate the gearbox gears in the frozen gear oil and make the process easier.
  3. If you have an important trip, you can remove the battery from the car and take it home for the night. So there will be more chances to start the engine in the morning.
  4. Well, of course, do not forget to turn off the dimensions and other devices, leaving the car in the parking lot.
